No 8 wire mentality. Myth or legend?

“Kiwi Ingenuity” or the “No 8 wire mentality” stems from the notion that kiwis or New Zealanders (as a race are) often thought to be resourceful individuals that are able to think outside the square to find a solution to a problem.
It encompasses the idea of using what is "at hand" to do the job that is required or solve the current problem.
This comes from New Zealand being so isolated in the early days of settlement, and 'necessity being the mother of invention.'
Back then there was often no one else to turn to for assistance. It was a matter of fix it yourself or keep the problem. Because New Zealand was so remote, people tried to find solutions themselves rather than having to wait a lengthy period to find a professional to come up with a solution, and also to end up paying exorbitant fees for this service when money was in short supply.
This site gives some examples that have sprung from Kiwi Ingenuity. Number 8 wire is often used inventively and practically for applications other than for fencing. It is also used as a term that epitomises the "kiwi
bloke" as someone who can turn their hand to anything. This resourcefulness is an example of sustainable practice.
